Sunday Morning Modern

We had Earth Day this week so I thought it only appropriate to reflect on some modern design that was site and earth sensitive. {click on links} Whether they are directly influenced by the nature around them or live lightly on our earth and resources take some time to be inspired by some of these designs. There is no reason to not be sensitive to nature, our resources and our community when adding to our built environment. Enjoy your rainy Sunday. Cheers!

The Shed Roof

Good Morning Folks. In our team’s discussions around new residential homes here in Asheville we often bring up the term “Shed-style” roof. Overall, it is a popular design feature for our contemporary mountain homes. Often designers use it to emulate the vernacular of a shed or a more utilitarian style of architecture. At other times it is used to either open up your view or control the sun coming in. I thought the below video gave a nice overview of the popular roof style here in Asheville. Enjoy!

SOLD | Oakley New Build

On Friday we closed on this minimal, modern farmhouse as a pre-construction design/build package by our friends at Rural Modern, one of the builders we work with. The young, first time home buyers are excited about the warm and clean styling of this simple home. Rural Modern says they “build homes and interiors with a unique perspective.” You, also, know that we like to SELL them. Cheers to getting this one off the ground! Kelly and Troy

Modern Monday

Here is a little inspiration to kick off your week. Cheers!

Sunday Morning Modern

mid-century-by-henry-hoover_660x330-660x330A Mid-Century in the Woods | What do we love more than a cool mid-century home? One in the woods that sends us into day dreaming of our own sweet retro pad here in the mountains. As with most of our clients they long for a modernism that uses natural materials and has a strong indoor/outdoor relationship. For inspiration read this article on one of architect Henry Hoover’s most remarkable houses. Built for Kenneth and Polly Germeshausen in 1958, it is representative of the late period in Hoover’s work. Enjoy your Sunday. Cheers!

screen-shot-2017-01-22-at-5-31-00-amThe Cabin…Again | Within my own life I’m constantly exploring new ideas for cool cabins. Between my desire for a small abode and/or creating unique AirBnB destinations it is a border line obsession. I’ve been looking at everything from homes in small new silos, 20′ container homes to creating something out of industrial garage kits. Last, there is that desire to build something unique from the ground up. Thus, I found this little Dwell article on a design competition for hotel cabins that I’ll share here.large

For more inspiration there is, as always, the Modern Asheville Pinterest page here, here and here. Enjoy your Cabin Dreamland and your Sunday. Cheers!

Clean Lines with Clean Materials

SHELBURNE WOODS UPDATE | Kelly and I are super excited by the progress on 51 Shelburne Woods in West Asheville. This speculative home constructed by Mountain Sun Builders has beautiful lines and flow throughout. We stopped by just before the insulation was about to shelburne-woodsbegin to see the Souther Yellow Pine timber construction and formaldehyde free plywoods of the light, bright and functional spaces. And wait to see you the dramatic views of the greenway path in the ravine behind this new small community. Stand by for when we bring this one to the market soon. Cheers!

Modern Monday

The Silver Lake was one of our favorite neighborhoods in LA while living there. Like Asheville, Los Angeles has hidden mid-century treasures tucked into hillsides. Enjoy this brief video on Richard Neutra’s own house and have a great Monday!

largeMOD MEN | Here is a timely story as we at Modern Asheville Real Estate work to enter a couple of mid-century homes for Griffin Preservation awards. It would be a first for this era of homes locally. As inspiration enjoy this story about the restoration of a mid-century architectural masterpiece. In 1962, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill architect Arthur Witthoefft won the AIA’s highest honor for a home he built in the lush woods of Westchester County. Having fended off a developer’s wrecking ball, Todd Goddard and Andrew Mandolene went above and beyond to make this manse mint again. Check out the article HERE. Happy Sunday!
