RCJ Builders | Modern Maker of Homes

Metro McCormick Field HouseComp 01

Bobby Jacobelly, of RCJ Building, gave us a call this week to check out his recent residential construction project just around the corner from our office. Kelly, Matt and myself jumped in the car and ran up. Bobby’s building a 4 level, 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath home nestled up to McCormick Field and overlooking downtown Asheville. The single owner/occupant of the home will use it for her metropolitan home base while hosting rotating visitors from out-of-town. Her east coast architectural family has been helping with details on the project.IMG_2700

The stealthy exterior of the home is finished in black which is on trend internationally. The interior, when finished, will be dressed in raw materials to give it a more rustic loft-like interior. As with most modern homes the indoor-outdoor relationship takes precedent. Thus, windows and doors play a key role in the home’s livability. Here Bobby ordered windows from AWILUX, a company out of Poland and Germany offering commercial style units with some affordability in mind. Comp 03

From bottom to top the ground floor shelters the garage, utility room and some flex space. The second level is all living space connect to the outside by a double sided fireplace. The third level contains two bedroom suites with a shared outdoor shower and laundry. The 4th level and crown of the home contains a versatile open space that can be either live, work or entertaining. The side of this space unfolds to an outdoor terrace overlooking McCormick Field. It will be an incredible entertaining space with the best views of home game fireworks.IMG_2702

Bobby hopes to have the home completed over the winter. The Modern Asheville Real Estate team looks forward to getting an updated tour then. Cheers and thanks Bobby!

Under Construction | Butterfly Hollow

IMG_1203Kelly and I paid a visit to our friends and clients, Jim and Linda, yesterday afternoon. They are in the middle of building their mountain home here in the Winding Ridge neighborhood just east of town. Having spent time searching for ways to make their own modern nest here without finding an existing home to meet their needs, they opted for building from scratch. So, we helped them purchase this gently sloped, 5 acre parcel with mountain views. The 3100 sq ft home under construction will be livable on one level with accessory spaces on the lower level — perfect for today’s buyers. Given Linda’s love for butterflies and the architecture of the roof they have crowned their future home Butterfly Hollow. We are so happy for them and love watching our clients dreams come to reality in making their modern home tailored just for them. Cheers Jim and Linda and thanks for the wine!Butterfly Comp

Parade of Homes | Peregrine 05 by Roost

21 St Charles Pl Asheville NC-small-001-Front-666x445-72dpiPeregrine 05, as David Way of Roost refers to it, is the latest in a developing series of Roost homes that evolved over the past decade. Having seen Peregrine 04 at the Parade of Homes a couple of years back, David’s clients sought him out to design a version on their lot in the Lakeview Park neighborhood. What evolved was an expanded and highly customized 2000sqft version adding in an equal amount of outdoor living space.Peregrine Comp

The Peregrine line of homes originated from the need to cleverly pack a lot of home in an efficient, one-level living space. Peregrine 01 in Montford was a 3 bedroom and 2 bath home constructed in 1400 sqft of indoor living space. Two outdoor living spaces were carved out of both ends of what is basically a box. Typically, the outdoor spaces are sheltered by a strong horizontal canopy.

21 St Charles Pl Asheville NC-small-005-Front-666x443-72dpiToday’s Peregrine 05 is approximately 2000 sqft with a luxurious owner’s suite on one end and extended canopies to shelter the outdoor living spaces. As with all Peregrine homes they are built with quality from core to finish. The framework begins with 2×6 construction, and engineered floor joists and subflooring. Walls are further tightened packed with formaldehyde free insulation.21 St Charles Pl Asheville NC-small-027-Kitchen-666x443-72dpi

For finish details Roost’s own cabinetry shop provided all the cabinetry throughout the home including Roost’s exclusive closet system. The home features extensive hidden storage in both the living space and owner’s suite. They even crafted the built-in master bed with hidden storage. Many of the cabinets are finished off with their own line of cabinet pulls.21 St Charles Pl Asheville NC-small-032-Closet-666x443-72dpi

Curious to see more? You can view the online tour or, better yet, come get the skinny on this cool home during the upcoming Asheville Home Builder’s Association’s Parade of Homes. You’ll be able to see all the finished details no shown here. David and the owner, Joy, will be there to answer any questions. Kelly and I will be there to assist them. You can stop by on either Oct. 11, 12, 18 or 19 from Noon until 5pm. To find out more on the complete tour click here. We all hope to see you there. Cheers!

Real Estate | Design Layout

IMG_0500It was a beautiful day for Kelly and I to get out of the real estate office. One of our investor clients asked us to stop by their duplex units under construction to help layout the kitchens prior to plumbing being installed. With the help of Chett we planned 14ft of central wall cabinetry including the refrigerator and pantry cabinet with an 8ft island floating in front to make it the focal point of the living area and allow for maximum flow on all sides.

MAKE YOUR MODERN | Pioneers of Modern in Riceville

photo-13One of our modern pals, Gary, sent me the above photo earlier this summer. Looking closely you’ll see what appears as a mirage of a modern home under construction across the pastoral fields of his home in Riceville. The photo perched on my desktop tugged at me until Kelly and I found ourselves visiting one recent Saturday. Comp

The construction did not just spontaneously appear one day, but has been carefully hand crafted and detailed by modern day pioneers, John and Carla. The couple moved to the states having graduated from Oxford University in England. Following, they spent two years in a motor home traveling the plains of the U.S. scouting a friendly place to call home. Their tour took them through Asheville. Ultimately, they were unable to escape nestling within the safety of our ancient mountains. They found a lot tucked into a hillside in Riceville among new suburban, craftsmen homes. Seeing the view behind the trees they quickly carved out a building site and mountain views for their contextually  simple and utilitarian, shed style home.Close View

Initially, they worked with Myles Alexander of Form and Function to help pull together the overall vision of the home. The over 1700 sqft box contains only two bedrooms including a cozy and efficient master suite for them and guest quarters. The remaining is clean open living space. Both sides have retracting doors for the ultimate in indoor/outdoor living. Comp 02

Neither had ever built before, but driven by a budget and the homesteading spirit they have hand constructed everything up from the foundation slab. It began with the 2×6 walls with staggered 24” opening to allow for the maximum in insulation all the way up to the HydroStop roofing. They scouted out local resources for custom details such as the steel columns off the back.Comp 03

Once they complete the house their homesteading compound will include tiered growing gardens out back neighbored by a chicken coup. They, also, have a spot carved out for two shipping containers to house extra storage and bunking guests.IMG_0417

Ultimately, their vision includes sharing what they have learned with other interested hands-on folks {Ashevillians at their core} and spread their modern-day pioneering philosophy. Their belief is that modernism should be accessible and affordable to everyone. Kelly and I are all too happy to clear a path for them. Cheers to John and Carla! Troy

Modern Homes | From Suburbia to Beyond

From West to North Asheville and from Town Mountain Road to the southern slopes of Candler, there are numerous modern homes orbiting our earthly community — one for every guru in town. A few are in design phases while others are completing construction with moving trucks arriving around the corner. We haven’t seen this many contemporary residences under construction since the sixties.Mod Comp

One of our preferred builders is near completion on the stealthy Lakeview Park modern home above & left. {Stay tuned for more on this one} I have friends just framing up their Town Mountain contemporary neighboring the Governer’s western residence. You should see the quality framing going on there! We even have builders starting to market modern design options for homes in developing communities. Mercury is out of retrograde and Jupiter has aligned with Modern.

If you are interested in your own sleek nest you can always call your astrologer, but why bother the middle man when you have Kelly and myself. Reach out and let us help you make your modern here in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Namaste Y’all!
