Why Won’t Mid-Century Design Die?

06mid1-master768By Steven Kurutz of the NYTimes | Thank you Gary for sending us this article over the weekend. It was a fun little peek into the professional world of designers and trend-setters including this from John Edelman, “There are two pieces we’d have to have an apocalypse for them to be out of style: the Saarinen Tulip Table and the Eames lounge chair and ottoman. They’re authored. They have a story behind them.” No doubt you want to see the rest so just go here. Cheers!

Sunday Morning Modern

Screen Shot 2016-08-21 at 6.52.11 AM1956 Eamed Lounger Debut | Charles and Ray Eames have come up in conversation recently in discussions about American modernism. There is tons of information on the internet you can find on them. However, this 11 minute video of them gives you a good overview on their work, their quirkiness and a bit on our social standards at the time. So, warm up your coffee and enjoy this little video clip. If you want a bit more following, as always, there is this Eames pinterest board. Cheers!

A Journey into the World of Charles and Ray Eames

Screen Shot 2016-01-22 at 9.10.58 AMEnjoy this brief design escape from the weather and into the world of Charles and Ray Eames thanks to Kelly. She found this video while perusing the design world on the internet one evening. It’s a brief trip into designer duo’s world and philosophy courtesy of the Barbican Centre in London. You don’t have to go to London, but just travel here for the video. Cheers!

Eldorado Mid-Century Salvage | New Years Sale

Eldorado CompAfter running into Christi and Simon of Eldorado Mid-Century Salvage at Sue and Lance’s retro party last week I wanted to stop in and check out their current inventory. I quickly noticed a space age sofa, a dozen lamps and some Bertoia wire chairs. Also, their booth had signs for 20% off. Be sure to stop by and find them at the Antique Tobacco Barn soon. Cheers!IMG_6654

Atomic Furnishings + Design | Grand Opening

IMG_0373I stopped by to visit with Hannah, Megan and Todd yesterday as they put the finishing touches on their new showroom, Atomic Furnishing & Design. Their mid-century furnishings shop will open this Saturday the 16th. The doors open at noon, but the festivities are between 5 and 8pm. Kelly, Chett and myself {the other Mod Squad} will no doubt be crashing it.

Todd and Megan combined forces having both been individual pickers of mid-century modern. Megan is an interior designer and Todd a carpenter and furniture restorer. Hannah, a Doula, brought her caring sense, natural style and handiwork skills in refinishing and upholstery. The trio combined and originally opened a booth in Screen Door, but success led them seeking wider spaces. They are now in Woodfin at 115 Elk Mountain. IMG_0374Stop by this Saturday for their debut and chat them up about their Paul McCobb chairs or their interior design. See you there! Troy

Vintage Modern 04 – Oddfellows Antiques

While out this past weekend scouring for fun furnishings for my new mid-century apartment I was surprised to find more vintage modern furnishings sprouting up in new locations. One location was Oddfellows Antiques at 124 Swannanoa River Road. Owned by Tom and Kelly Haskin they describe their place as a 12,000sq/ft Design Warehouse. Since the last time I had visited they definitely have a great selection of thoughtfully displayed merchandise. I am already looking forward to my return visit!

Vintage Modern 03 – Sweeten Creek

After driving to see the Atomic Ranch house on Brooklyn today I found myself in front of another antique establishment.  I thought I would pop in and see what they had in the way of mid-century goodies.  I was not disappointed.  Though not overwhelming in quantity I did find 3 booths with a good share of Eames era furnishings from sleek and cool to kitsch.

Here is what you need to know:

Name: Sweeten Creek Anitques & Collectible

Location: 115 Sweeten Creek Road

Hours: Mon-Sat 10-6pm, Sun. Noon-6pm

Vintage Modern 02 – ScreenDoor

In continuing our tour of vintage modern dealers we find ourselves at the ScreenDoor in Asheville.  With over 25,000 sq.ft. of groovy goodness they feature antiques, new home decor, hand crafted items, books and vintage modern of course.  I found two or three booths of authentic modern furnishings, as well as, as few booths that cater to the industrial side of modern.  No matter what you are looking for you will find a lot of fun and creative ideas here to affordably furnish your swank pad.  Here is what you need to know:

Name: ScreenDoor

Location: 115 Fairview Road, Asheville

Hours: M-Sat. 10-5, Sun. 12-5

Vintage Modern 01 – Tobacco Barn

In a new series of articles I will be featuring retailers of vintage modern and mid-century (dare I use the word) antiques.  As hard as it is for me to say, midcentury is the latest in antique collectibles.  For those of us who feel at home in a “Brady Bunch” interior there are plenty of resources in the Asheville area if you know where to go.

I’ll begin with the Tobacco Barn which has 72 antique dealers under one roof.  I saw a handful of booths that focused on vintage modern.  Here is the information you need:

Name: Tobacco Barn

Location: on Swannanoa River Rd between Biltmore Village and the Asheville Mall

Hours: M-Th 10-6, Fri & Sat. 9-6, Sun 1-6
