Covet | Industrial Modern

Perhaps it’s a more manly or utilitarian version of modern. Delicate furnishings don’t last well in my domain. Industrial strength is a requirement. Thus, you find I store my t-shirts in old military filing cabinets and my kitchen cutting board sits atop a repurposed, 5o’s school projector cart.Covet

It is a popular style here and there are many places one can find it in Asheville. One of those is Covet’s booth at the Screen Door. RCJ Builders | Modern Maker of Homes

Bobby Jacobelly, of RCJ Building, gave us a call this week to check out his recent residential construction project just around the corner from our office. Kelly, Matt and myself jumped in the car and ran up. Bobby’s building a 4 level, 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath home nestled up to McCormick Field and overlooking downtown Asheville. The single owner/occupant of the home will use it for her metropolitan home base while hosting rotating visitors from out-of-town. Her east coast architectural family has been helping with details on the project.IMG_2700

The stealthy exterior of the home is finished in black which is on trend internationally. The interior, when finished, will be dressed in raw materials to give it a more rustic loft-like interior. As with most modern homes the indoor-outdoor relationship takes precedent. Thus, windows and doors play a key role in the home’s livability. Here Bobby ordered windows from AWILUX, a company out of Poland and Germany offering commercial style units with some affordability in mind. Comp 03

From bottom to top the ground floor shelters the garage, utility room and some flex space. The second level is all living space connect to the outside by a double sided fireplace. The third level contains two bedroom suites with a shared outdoor shower and laundry. The 4th level and crown of the home contains a versatile open space that can be either live, work or entertaining. The side of this space unfolds to an outdoor terrace overlooking McCormick Field. It will be an incredible entertaining space with the best views of home game fireworks.IMG_2702

Vintage Mid-Century Modern Industrial Design

I woke this morning finding myself wanting to escape into a vintage cartoon as I would have done as a child. In searching the internet I found this instead and soon got lost in the world of the “American Stylist”. So much fun. Pour yourself some coffee and start your weekend with this. Enjoy!

ROOST | Container Home Debut

IMG_2330After years of discussion Kelly and I met with David Way on Thursday to tour his very first container home finishing up production. The 320 sqft container will soon be tricked out and on display. David chose to leave the interior mostly IMG_2325exposed while cladding the exterior in insulation and exterior MDO Plywood — leaving more living space inside. The floor will be finished off in white oak, along with, the Roost’s own custom cabinetry throughout. The bathroom pod is clad in poplar and steel on the exterior while the shower will be finished off in a rich ipe wood. There will be four doors on the front of the container leading out to deck that runs the length of the unit for optimal indoor/outdoor living. The swanky pod mixes sophisticated design with efficiency. It is what David does best.IMG_2328

The nearly complete home will be featured tomorrow at the Asheville Housing Fair September 19th from 10am to 2pm at the Stephens-Lee Center located near downtown at 30 George Washington Carver Ave., Asheville NC, 28801.
