The Perfect Forever Home

We have been discussing this type of home for years given the need for smaller, smarter homes that live like a loft for both retirees and other couples living smaller. People are living differently and Asheville, for the most part, doesn’t have the homes that meet those needs. We would say the home featured in this article and video successfully captures what many people are looking for today. Susan and Charles Elder’s roots run deep in their neighborhood outside of downtown Houston. They moved into a starter house there in 1981, just six houses around the corner from the house Susan grew up in. Now after raising their kids and retiring they’ve built this amazing dream home.

NW 1Kelly and I brought our Seller/Builder together with one of our Buyer’s on this modern, shed style home yesterday prior to breaking ground. Greg McGuffey of Earthtone Builders approached us to market his first spec home. Given the home fit our buyer’s needs we were able to bring both parties together early in the process.

The 1480 sqft, 3 bedroom and 2 bath home will be a rare one-level, new build home for West Asheville which is what most of our clients are looking for as they age in place over time. The cutaway2quality, green home Greg thoughtfully designed is earth friendly, light, airy and low maintenance which will keep it low-cost and sustainable. When completed the home will be Near Net Zero and come with a NC Green Built Gold Certificate. In detail, it will feature concrete floors with radiant heat, concrete counters, vaulted ceilings, bonus loft, stainless appliances and fixtures and topped off with a galvanized metal roof and 5Kw grid-tied solar system. peregrine 04 | the Evolution of a Box

Kelly and I have been watching Roost’s peregrine series of homes under development for several years. Starting with peregrine 01 {below} on Westover with its corten steel siding — we loved the one level, age in place, easy to maintain concept, 115 Westover Compalong with the efficient box layout and clean, modern aesthetic. Over time David Way has perfected the concept and we have watched it grow and expand as he recently completed peregrine 05 in Lakeview Park.767 Caribou Rd Asheville NC-small-001-Front-666x445-72dpi

Here we see peregrine 04 {above} which takes on some of the massing characteristics of the surrounding ranch neighborhood. He has added the two car garage, front picture window and porch with the biggest volume facing the street similar to the home’s neighbors. The 2200 sqft home retains the efficient one-level living, but adds a split bedroom plan with a spa master bath and custom roost closets. Want to see a bit more? Today, I drove by to see the progress on David’s latest creation for clients in Lakeview  Park. This week the team began applying the exterior wood and metal materials further emphasizing the composition of architectural volumes. St Charles Oct 2013

A New Modern Ranch

IMG_2867You all know I love a ranch house, but my affection just went to a deeper level. I’m ready to make a committment if NC state will allow it. David and his client are creating an updated version for today. Yesterday, I stopped by for a quick visit.

The home is being built on what was an empty lot in an existing neighborhood of fifties ranch homes. As both a designer and builder he was careful to maintain the scale and elements of neighboring homes. Context influenced him to included the garage, picture window and front porch. Get the idea? Caribou Comp 02The house will be approximately 2000 sqft and include four bedrooms. The back of the home has a recessed patio with a wall of doors that will open completely to dissolve the barrier between interior and exterior. His client hired a friend to fabricate the custom metal door.

Unfortunately, given the mud and my designer tennis shoes I did not get inside. However, I’ll be back and better equipped the next time — so stay tuned.

Kelly and I enjoy scouting out simple ranches with those extra details that reflect that rustic side of Asheville or a universal retro look.
